Account lockout policy is locking out Windows XP clients with the correct password

We have a Windows 2000 domain with Windows 98/2000/XP clients. When we set the account lockout policy after 5 bad attempts, it seems our Windows XP clients get locked out even though they are already logged in or inputting the correct password. There are a few errors in Event viewer that may point to authenticating to our Exchange server but searching the Web brings up nothing on those. Have you seen this before?
This article points to similar problem, but I really don't think that it is your issue. However, it is interesting and offers some additional troubleshooting methods:

Here is another problem (and a more likely to be your issue). This one was solved in Windows 2000 SP 3:
