Are tapes a reliable backup system?

I am looking for a reliable backup system for a small business that backs up only about 1GB of information a day. I was thinking data/tape drive might be the best solution but I hear that tapes are not reliable. Can you advise?

Tapes are fine for most uses; they just need to be replaced on a regular schedule depending on their use. Lately, I've been using the portable USB drives made by Maxtor and other manufacturers to backup critical data files. The drives hold anywhere from 100 -300 GB and can be locked in a cabinet or vault when not in use. Check out http://www.maxtor.com for more.
