Can I install Active Directory on a stand alone PC just so I can play around with it?

I tried installing Active Diectory on Win2000 Advanced Server, but it won't let me install it. It is a stand alone PC. I only wanted to play with it so I have a real idea of working with Active Directory. How can I complete the install?

You should be able to promote any Win2k server to a domain controller. Without more information, I won't be able to give you an explicit answer, but the most common reasons for promotion problems are DNS and not having a network adapter. If you don't have a network adapter and don't want to buy one, you can install a virtual adapter called the Microsoft Loopback Adapter, or MLA. Use the New Hardware wizard to install the MLA.
