Q

Can I restore data and settings from an NT backup onto a new Win2k server?

Is it possible to install a fresh copy of Windows 2000 server, using the same name as the old NT server, and restore the data from the last backup? If so, will the permissions, shared folders and SIDs remain the same and operational?
Nope. Not possible. You can restore the data from the backup of the NT system, but you will not retain any of the old security information, configuration, etc. If you want to retain some of this stuff, you'll need to perform an upgrade install onto the running NT box.
