Q

Double clicking in an event results in a popup window that goes away

I have a symptom in Windows 2000 SP4. In Event Viewer, I double click on an event and a window pops up and then goes away never to be seen again. If I right click on an event and select properties, it claims there are no properties available on this object. I have cleared all events and have checked the security permissions on them and all looks fine. Different users don't matter. It does though pertain to the local system for if I open a remote event viewer it does display correctly. Lastly it is happening on two separate systems of mine, for no other reason I can find.
There was a buffer overrun vulnerability in the event viewer that caused similar behavior. Allegedly, the problem was fixed in Windows 2000 SP3; however, it is possible that the fix may have been overwritten by other components (hotfixes or other service packs). I would start by reinstalling SP4 on the affected systems to see if it resolves the issue.
