How can I determine what OS users are running on the network?

How can I determine what Operating Systems users are running on the network?
Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) has this capability built-in. It may also be possible to remotely probe the Registry of the machine in question (provided they're running the Remote Registry service, which is usually disabled as being a security hazard), since most of the environment variables (including the OS revision and stepping) are stored there.
