How many bridgehead servers do we need?

Do you know of any good articles that explain how to calculate the number of bridgehead servers needed for site replication? Say, perhaps the number of bridgehead servers needed to replicate 10 sites, as opposed to the number needed to replicate 150 sites?

The point of a bridgehead server is to be the central point for communication for the site. So one per site would generally be the response. Backups can be created.
