How marketable is having VMWare certification?

The VMware certified professional (VCP) program has been around for a little over a year. You can follow either a one- or two-exam path to earn the only credential in that program currently available -- namely the VCP. Courses and exams are available (the latter only from Pearson VUE, the former through either online or classroom offerings). So far EMC (VMware's parent company) hasn't seen fit to disclose any numbers on the population of certified professionals who've completed the program, but my best guess would be between 1,000 and 2,000. In looking at major IT-oriented job posting sites (Dice, CareerBuilder, HotJobs, etc.) the number of jobs that mention VMware counts out as follows:
Yahoo! HotJobs: 62 (none mentions VMware certification explicitly)
Dice: 124 (only one mentions VMware certification)
CareerBuilder: 44 (only one mentions VMware certification)

I hope I'm not jumping to an unwarranted conclusion when I say that while VMware skills and knowledge seem to have some value and can lead to a fair number of opportunities, the value of obtaining VMware certification isn't quite as clear.

Hope this helps, and thanks for posting.
