PDC in NT4 domain cannot be upgraded to Win2k due to hardware issues

The PDC in my NT4 domain cannot be upgraded to Windows 2000 due to hardware issues. I plan on building a new server as a BDC, promoting it to PDC and then upgrading it to Windows 2000 and AD. Will my old demoted PDC stay as a BDC in a Windows 2000 infrastructure without complaining that it is really a PDC?

The old PDC will have its roled changed to BDC. The machine you are going to upgrade to Win2000 will need to be the PDC at the time of the upgrade. The old machine will happily accept its role as BDC and will see the Win2000 machine as an NT 4.0 PDC for the domain. You should definately acquire another machine that is capable of handling Windows 2000 to make sure that you have redundancy in your AD structure. The NT 4.0 BDC can NEVER be promoted to PDC again (unless you are trying to fall back to an pre-upgrade NT 4.0 domain)!
