Problems with user access rights

Problems with user access rights

I can't add a user to the access rights of a file or folder.
I am unable to change the user access rights for any files or folders.
In both the above cases, it gives some application error (invalid instruction at memory location, blah, blah, blah.)
When I add a user using "Users and Passwords", it gives the same sort of error. It adds from the user management console; it doesn't show the user in the Users and Passwords".

Please help. Thanks.

I don't know what OS you are working from. But either your system is corrupted and you should perform an upgrade install or a fresh install to correct the problem or you are working from a non-administrative level user account.
