Why are there IRQs higher than 16?

Why are there IRQs higher than 16?
Because some smart guys created the technology. :-) All I know is that a nifty new thing built into some motherboards called Advanced Programmable Interrupt Controller (APIC) makes it all possible. Do a Google search and read up on the specs if you really want to know all about it.
