Currently our organization is entirely a Microsoft environment. We utilize SMS for inventory collection but I find SMS unreliable for this purpose (especially for surplus devices). What inventory solution do you recommend?

If you find SMS unreliable for inventory, then there should be things you can do to improve the reliability. Resolving your issue would be a more cost effective solution than looking for an alternative application just for inventory. SMS does a great job inventorying workstations and servers. Without knowing what version of SMS you are using, you should look into upgrading to SMS 2003. SMS 2003 improves on Systems Management Server. For inventory problems, see the following resource:
