QUESTION POSED ON: 22 December 2003 What problems could I be facing by having multiple NetBIOS domains within my LAN? I am trying to reduce unnecessary traffic and have found that NetBIOS traffic runs rampant. Although I have removed much by finding and eliminating viruses, I am confused as to how much NetBIOS traffic is normal.

By default, NetBIOS traffic is broadcast-based, which is why you're seeing higher traffic than you think are normal. Install a WINS server for name resolution, and configure your network clients to point to it instead of using broadcasts. This will create point-to-point name resolution traffic, rather than continuous broadcasts.
