I would like to be able to run a "Welcome new user" document that explains how to install a printer, set up e-mail and get help. I would like it to run only once and only if it is the first time a user logs on. I have a mix of Windows 2000 and XP machines and do not have Active Directory, so I was hoping for something I could put into a login script.

The Microsoft site said to load the default user ntuser.dat file into HKU, but there is no Runonce key and Windows ignores it if I create one. Can you point me in the right direction?

The best way to do this really is through Active Directory. But judging from the description of what you've already tried, you might want to make sure you're creating the key in the correct place. I've seen people have this problem before and it was because they weren't using the right key location for their version of Windows.

A simple thing you could do is put a batch file into the Startup folder that launches the document in question and then deletes itself. The SearchWinSystems.com site also has some detailed information about different ways you can get things to run on startup.
