QUESTION POSED ON: 02 December 2005
We have a three-server Windows 2003 infrastructure with FSMO assigned to two of them -- DC1 and DC2. They both go down and DC3 is now only a GC with no FSMO roles. Of course, we lose connection to the domain as well. Why can't DC3 automatically assume the FSMO roles and become the PDC for the company?

>
FSMO roles must be transferred and/or seized manually by an administrator, since each one serves a sensitive role on your network and should not be moved without forethought and planning. See Using Ntdsutil.exe to transfer or seize FSMO roles to a domain controller for information about transferring and seizing FSMO roles.
