IBM's System x Servers are designed to deliver an affordable, industry-standard server platform that help users tackle enterprise workloads.

IBM introduced four new servers into its System x Enterprise product line over the past year: the x3755, x3800, x3850 and x3950.

The x3755 supports Dual-Core AMD Opteron Processors created for high-performance computing and business computing applications that demand maximum memory availability. For large memory configurations, the server uses Xcelerated Memory Technology to achieve low latency and high-speed access to memory data.

Key x3755 features include:

  • Flexible configurations for optimal performance.
  • Quad-core processors that can run 32- and 64-bit applications simultaneously.
  • Front-access light path diagnostics pull-down panel to help diagnose and fix problems more quickly.
  • The x3800, x3850 and x3950 models all support Intel Xeon processors. The x3800 provides an internal storage capacity for remote and branch-office solutions. The server combines 64-bit, four-processor performance with up to 3.6 TB of high-speed internal storage and includes high-availability features such as three levels of memory protection.

According to IBM, the x3850 is ideal for enterprise resource planning and Java-based applications, while the x3950 is best suited for virtualization and customer relationship management.

The x3800, x3850 and x3950 all include a feature called Predictive Failure Analysis, which helps monitor critical components and triggers alerts before problems arise. In addition, the x3950 has the PowerExecutive feature for monitoring server power consumption.

System requirements: Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4.0, SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 9.0, VMware ESX Server 3.0.

    Pricing: Start at $5,275 for x3755, $8,177 for x3800 and $6,416.25 for x3850.
