I'm the "computer guy" at a small to medium size account (about 200 workstations and about 10 servers). When M$ support "goes away," how will I know the difference? I have never received any support or had contact directly with M$! As far as I know, it is some mythical organization that disappeared years ago. However, I have had no problem identifying people and products who understand and work with NT4 very well. As a matter of fact, there is a wealth of fine products for NT4 that I haven't even got to yet! And by the by, I've been running NT4 for the past 3 years in a complex domain with 99.9% availability, even with migration of applications.
About time for Win2k

Anyone still on NT4 deserves all the problems they get. Win2K has been out for almost 4 years, and only the clueless, the lame, the blind and the foolish are still struggling to make NT4 into a stable system. The question at this point should be when (not whether) to upgrade to WinServer 2003 from Win2K.
Those who are threatening to put Linux on the desktop better check with their users first. If someone is going home to the advanced GUIs of WinXP and then being forced to run the clunky Win3.1 interfaces of Linux (a possibly illegal operating system that will not hold it's users harmless if someone starts to come after them for the royalties) at work; they may find they want to stick with the major leagues. It's too damn easy these days to find other IT types more willing to consider their users than indulge their jealousy of Gates.

I am running NT 4 SP6 against the recommendation of my IT support center. I say good riddance to Microsoft if it fails to support NT anymore. I would upgrade ONLY if it HURTS to stay at NT.
Who needs Windows?

I'm moving from NT4 domain to Linux/OpenLDAP, and I'm going to look at Novell Nterprise Linux Services in place of the OpenLDAP. I will maintain a couple of W2K boxes, for now. I'm also planning a desktop migration from Windows to either Linux and/or Mac OS X. For apps that only run on Windows (for now), I will keep my Citrix server. I keep telling my app vendors that I need all my apps to run on a Web server so that I can deploy them to all students, and faculty can access it anywhere at anytime. Once all of this complete, I won't need Windows for anything.

I have 3 small business clients that use NT4 server primarily for file sharing and printer sharing. What could I use for justification to these clients to pay $1000 to upgrade to Windows Server 2003 or $750 to upgrade to W2K server?
They have from three to 10 users on their systems, and "It's working." If it's working fine, don't screw with it...
