Server Monitoring Tools
Ipswitch WhatsUp Professional Premium 2006
Judges bestowed the Gold Award in SearchWinComputing.com's Server Monitoring Products of the Year 2006 category on Ipswitch Inc.'s server and network monitoring solution WhatsUp Professional Premium 2006.
The product can map the network in minutes, using wizards to scan for routers, switches, servers, printers and other networked devices, then storing the information in a SQL database. Using SQL databases for an information store, rather than requiring large dedicated servers to be devoted to running the system, was one feature the judges loved about WhatsUp Professional 2006.
That, plus its price, was why the judges gave it the top score of all the competing products in terms of value. One judge said they would definitely be looking at bringing the product into their shop.
WhatsUp Professional 2006 allows network administrators to easily manage their Microsoft Exchange and SQL Server-based applications. In addition, the product supports any application compliant with Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI), as well as devices compatible with SNMP Versions 1, 2 and 3. As a result, almost any network-attached device can be monitored.
If Microsoft Exchange or SQL Server stops unexpectedly, WhatsUp Professional can be configured to fix the problem by restarting the crashed server automatically. WhatsUp will also notify IT managers of the event, allowing them to keep track of performance.
Pricing: WhatsUp Professional 2006, Premium Edition is available in three price points, defined by device count: Unlimited ($3,495); up to 300 devices ($2,395) and up to 100 devices ($1,895). For the same device counts, the Professional Edition's price points are $4,995, $3,595 and $2,495.
