Microsoft's Internet Security and Acceleration Server, which runs on Windows 2000 Server, offers a combination of services that include: Web proxy service (w3proxy.exe), a firewall service (wspsrv.exe), content download (W3Prefetch.exe), a Gatekeeper service (part of svchost.exe), the ISA Server Control service (Mspadmin.exe – as expressed in the ISA management application), and a Server Proxy Filter Extension.

Of these services, you can only control the Web proxy service, firewall service, and content download service from the management console. All of these services can be stopped and started within the Services control panel.

You can use the command prompt to stop ISA Server Proxy Filter Extensions, ISA Server Control service, and the H.323 Gatekeeper services. The syntax goes as follows:

  • net stop w3proxy or net stop "microsoft web proxy"
  • net stop wspsrv or net stop "microsoft firewall"
  • net stop gksvc or net stop "microsoft h.323 gatekeeper"
  • net stop mspfltext (for the Proxy Filter Extensions)
  • net stop isactrl or netstop "microsoft isa server control"

Stopping the server control also stops the Web proxy, firewall, and content download services. It will also stop the Routing and Remote Access Service when you enable ISA Server as a VPN server.

The equivalent restart command is the net start version of the above commands. Don't forget the quotation marks for the long names. These commands also work in the scripts you write.
