The following is tip #1 from "10 tips in 10 minutes: Configuring Windows 2000 Server," excerpted from Chapter 6 in the book Microsoft Windows 2000 Server Administrator's Companion, Second Edition, published by Microsoft Press.

First things first. After your Windows installation is complete, you should check the system for setup errors or device problems. Check the following items:

  • Check Event Viewer for errors. Event Viewer displays detailed information about system events. This information includes the event type, the date and time that the event occurred, the source of the event, the category for the event, the Event ID, the user who was logged on when the event occurred, and the computer on which the event occurred. For a step-by-step guide describing how to use Event Viewer as a troubleshooting tool, see this Microsoft article: How To Diagnose System Problems with Event Viewer in Microsoft Windows 2000.

  • Review setup errors. To do so, open the \Winnt\setuperr.log file, if it exists. If it doesn't, there were no errors. We are now ready to move to the next step in the installation process.
