Windows built-in backup software NTBackup has state-of-the art features such as bare metal recovery, ASR, open file support etc. However, it can be a cludge to use and lacks a few essential features such as proper scheduling and management of backup files. An alternative is free software called Enhanced Windows Backup that adds these capabilities and more. You can download it here: http://www.softswift.com/Download.aspx.
