the Task Manager, click on the Processes tab and end/kill (End Process Button) the process that is causing the problem. For example, if an open Word document is frozen and will not close, open the Task Manager, go to Processes and click on the frozen application (usually "winword.exe" in this situation). Click End Process and the application will close instantly. Just reopen the document and start working again.
