Quickly recovering data that has gotten lost or corrupted is a top priority for Windows administrators. The options that Microsoft's Data Protection Manager provides for recovering data include the capability to recover specific files or file shares. However it's often better to recover data at a higher level, especially if you have to recover protected shares.

Most of the options DPM provides are selected and run from the DPM Administrator Console. But if you try to recover data using the All Protected Shares mode in the Administrator Console, the user interface can freeze. This will usually happen if you try to expand the All Protected Shares mode when you are protecting a large number of shares.

You'll have better luck recovering the shares using the All Protected Volumes mode. According to Microsoft, if you have more than 100 shares, this method will also prove faster. And if you have more than 500 protected shares, Microsoft specifically recommends using the All Protected Volumes mode.

Note: If you need to recover several files from the same protected folder, it is faster to recover the entire folder rather than just the individual files you need.
