If you have Windows NT 4 and a Matrox graphics cards in your PC, there is a screen saver you can download

from their web site that automatically activates the power saving features of the monitor.

Additionally, if you edit the registry you can activate the screen saver at the logon prompt at this key:

  • HKEY_USERS/.DEFAULT/CONTROL PANEL/DESKTOP/SCRNSAVE.EXE:REG_SZ:estar.scr
Make sure you copy the screen saver to C:winntsystem32 first.

This tip is specific to an OS and a make of monitor -- but it would be worthwhile for you to look for similar screen savers specific to your own platform and equipment. You can then consider editing the registry in the same way to launch the same sort of power saving executable.
