Problem with Internet Explorer 6.0 and SSL

After Internet Explorer 6.0/SP1 suddenly stopped accessing secure Web sites (https://), and many hours of research and telephone support, I discovered that Norton Personal Firewall subscription had expired. This blocked all access to SSL sites -- including renewing the subscription on the Symantec.com Web site! Uninstalling the firewall solved the problem.
