A simple method to reduce potential Denial Of Service (DOS) attacks is to make the HOST file (WINNTSystem32driversetc or Windowssystem32driversetc) "Read Only." Many new viruses infect this file and either make invalid entries or map real locations to 127.0.0.1. You may still get infected, but the results of the virus won't be able to function!
