Restrict users when deploying MSI through GPOs

Do you deploy MSI through GPOs and want to restrict users from installing and removing applications themselves? Here's how:

Deploying MSI through GPOs requires users and computers to have elevated permissions in order to install software. Users can then double-click any MSI and install applications.

The solution is to change permissions on the files "msiexec.exe" and "appwiz.cpl":

  • R for authenticated users
  • R for Everyone
  • R for Local users
  • "RunAs" works on "appwiz.cpl"

The permissions for authenticated users can be set through GPOs, the permissions for local users will have to set on a local workstation.
