In depth about WINS

About the White Paper:
WINS stands for Windows Internet Name Service, a service running on Windows NT Server that provides NetBIOS name-to-IP address resolution. NetBIOS names are used exclusively by Windows networking. Names must be resolved to network addresses in order for hosts to locate Microsoft-specific resources such as Domain Controllers, shares and named pipes; it is no exaggeration to say that Windows networking is nearly impossible without a means of NetBIOS name resolution. When first developed, NetBIOS networking was implemented on single-segment LANs, and name resolution (irrespective of transport protocol) was achieved by broadcasts. On an Internet, if Windows networking across subnets is required, a mechanism for name resolution between subnets must be provided. |
