Can Exchange 2000 work without Active Directory?

Is it necessary to have Active Directory installed in order to use Exchange 2000? If not, what features are lost by not running AD?
Yes, it is. While you don?t need your Exchange 2000 Server to be an AD domain controller, being a member of an AD domain is a requirement. Active Directory, DNS and IIS are just some of the requirements for running Exchange 2000. Exchange 5.5 and earlier had its own directory and directory service. In Exchange 2000, Active Directory performs these functions for Exchange 2000 in addition to other things it provides Exchange 2000. Hope this helps.
