Having problems integrating Exchange 5.5 in my Windows 2000 migration

I have upgraded the PDC with Windows 2000 SP2 and Active Directory successfully. I have tried upgrading the BDC with Exchange to a domain controller with AD, and a member server. With both of these scenarios, the Exchange services will not start.

I am testing out our Win2k migration in a lab. The major problem I am having is with Exchange. I have Exchange 5.5 (SP4) installed on a NT 4.0 BDC w/SP6.

I have upgraded the PDC with Win2k SP2 and AD successfully. I have tried upgrading the BDC with Exchange to a domain controller with AD, and a member server. With both of these scenarios, the Exchange services will not start.

The last scenarios, which worked, was setting up a member server from scratch, and then installing Exchange 5.5 on it. It did work; the service started.

Is this my only option if I want to continue to use Exchange 5.5 on my network? I only have about 65 mailboxes in total, so it's not a big deal. But I would like to know if there is some kind of answer for the first two scenarios (upgrading to domain controller w/AD, or upgrading and selecting member server)?

When upgrading the NT 4.0 to Windows 2000 AD, you need to keep in mind that Exchange is using a directory already. The two directories (Exchange and Windows 2000) don?t necessarily talk to each other. You need to utilize a component for Exchange 5.5 to correctly communicate with Active Directory. The component is called the Active Directory Connector.
