IT administrators always need keen insight into the status and operating conditions of the servers and endpoint systems across the network. Although enterprise-class data centers will typically adopt a comprehensive systems management framework to organize and manage the environment, small or midsize businesses may choose to use Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials as a management platform.
System health capabilities are included with Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials but can also be installed under the Standard or Datacenter versions when installing the Windows Server Essentials Experience role.
When installed, a health report summarizes the health of the server and every computer connected to it. The report examines issues like missing Windows patches or updates, missing or obsolete malware protection (such as outdated virus definitions), incomplete backups, critical services not running and other issues that demand IT administrator intervention (such as important or critical errors in event logs). Reports can be sent to an administrator via email, but can also be reviewed in the Alert Viewer launched from the server's Dashboard or the Health Reports tab in Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials.
The initial view provides a summary of each health category. Issues are prioritized using a warning icon (yellow triangle with an exclamation) or an error icon (red circle with an "x"). Clicking the Details entry suggests corrective actions and gives a detailed explanation of the problem that may include more insight into underlying causes.
Alerts are updated every 30 minutes by default, but administrators can optimize the report generation schedule, or look for alerts on-demand by accessing the Alert Viewer or the Health Reports tab and using the Refresh button to update reporting.
