IM options with Exchange 2003

We're going to be migrating from Exchange 5.5 and I had hoped to start taking advantage of Exchange as an instant messaging server. But since that feature was taken out with Exchange 2003, we're stuck using public, consumer IM services. Can you recommend any good IM servers that we can run internally? Are there any that offer synchronization with Active Directory?
I recommend using Windows messaging. It is probably already installed on your machines and it'll be simple to deploy.
