Outlook hangs after Exchange server reboot

SearchExchange.com expert Peter terSteeg offers tips on how to diagnose what might make Microsoft Outlook hang after an Exchange 2000 server reboot.

We migrated from an Exchange 2000 server to an Exchange 2000 server on new hardware. Whenever we reboot the old Exchange server, Outlook hangs for most of the clients, especially those who are using Outlook 98. Do you know what could be causing this?
Did you try to delete and recreate a profile to see if the user still hangs? I am initially wondering if there is an issue with the client service, Outlook Address Book. Also, did you assign unique IP addresses to the new Exchange server?

In any event, see if the creation of a new mail profile and/or Outlook Address Book service corrects the issue. Also, check the event logs of the new and old servers to attempt to better diagnose the issue you are experiencing.
