Sending email to an Exchange distribution list containing SMTP and EX addresses

Is it possible to set up an Exchange distribution list that contains both SMTP and EX email addresses? SearchExchange.com expert David Sengupta weighs in.

We have trouble sending email to a distribution list if it contains both 'SMTP' and 'EX' addresses. When the 'EX' addresses are removed, there is no problem. Do we need to use separate lists for different address types?
What version of Exchange are you using? The "EX" address type is X.500-based and used internally by Exchange Server … is there a reason you're not just using all SMTP addresses?
