Troubleshoot connection problems with Internet Explorer

An admin wonders about the problems he is having with Internet Explorer 6.0.

I am having problems with Internet Explorer 6.0, and the option to update Windows is grayed out. We have little or no Internet access in IE6, but Outlook Express and FireFox work fine. The only solution I can think of is to reinstall Windows XP. Can you suggest something else?
The best place to start is by looking at the Windows Update error logs to see what the exact nature of the problem is. In Windows XP, this log is kept at %SystemRoot%WindowsUpdate.log and is a plain-text file that can be read with Notepad or another text editor.

Once you pin that down, you can usually troubleshoot the problem in greater detail. The Update XP site has a very informative page about how to troubleshoot Windows Update errors.
