Unable to mail-enable new Exchange public folders

After a system reboot, a user cannot mail-enable new Exchange public folders. SearchExchange.com expert Peter terSteeg offers troubleshooting advice.

We currently run Exchange 2000 in a two-server active-passive cluster configuration. A while ago, during routine system maintenance, one of our admins rebooted the two servers.

Upon bootup, the cluster service didn't want to start anymore. So our administrator went into the cluster's services, changed the logon from local system to our cluster service user, and rebooted the Exchange server again. This brought the cluster up and got email going, but now we can't mail-enable new Exchange public folders. We get the message: "The mail proxy for this folder cannot be found. This may be due to replication delays. The mail-enabled pages will not be shown."

During off hours, I went in and changed the cluster service back to the local system logon and rebooted. Amazingly, the cluster service started and email came up, but I still have the same problem with Exchange public folders.

Also, we are going to be migrating to Exchange Server 2003 and have recently put in a two-server active-passive cluster on the network. I don't know if this is related or not, but I thought I'd mention it.

Try running Exchange System Manager from the actual Exchange server using the proper service account. Let me know if this works.
