Will an Exchange NT client work on a Windows 2000 server?
I read your answer to someone's question about running an Exchange client on a Windows 2000 machine. I realize there is no specific client other than Outlook 2000, but I would still like to use Exchange NT client. The machine is a Windows 2000 server and I merely need a simple email application to send out quota notifications. Will Exchange NT client even work on a Windows 2000 server correctly?
I'm not sure which answer you are referring to, but it sounds like you may have mis-read it. There are several clients available for Exchange besides Outlook 2000. For example, you can use Outlook 97, Outlook 98, Outlook 2002, Outlook Web Access, Outlook Express, just about any POP3 and IMAP4 client, the Exchange 5.0, etc. If all you need is a lightweight Exchange client on your NT/2000 server, then the Exchange 5.x client should work just fine, and is in fact, recommended over Outlook for these purposes.
One thing I do remember saying about Outlook 2000 is that you should never install Outlook 2000 on a server running Exchange 2000. By design, Outlook 2000 and Exchange 2000 on the same computer is not supported, and will break things.
Hope this helps.
