RIBLOE (Remote Insight Board -- Lights Out Edition)

Contributor(s): Sean Rickard

The Remote Insight Board -- Lights Out Edition (RIBLOE) is a Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI) card intended for the remote management of Compaq servers. Remote control is typically done over the Web. The 'lights out' feature is an independent, backup power source that allows the card to continue functioning even if the utility power fails.

The RIBLOE card can be operated using any Web browser, on a computer using any operating system. It allows remote management of the server continuously, at any time of the day or night, seven days a week, 365 days a year. This makes it ideal for managing servers where there are no personnel on site. The remote graphical user interface (GUI) allows the server to be powered-up or powered-down from the remote site. The card supports a virtual floppy drive, so the host server can be remotely booted up with a typical 3.5-inch boot diskette. Data transfer between the server and the remote site can take place at up to 100 megabits per second (100 Mbps) using the onboard Ethernet chip.
