Microsoft has released a security update to prevent attacks involving the enumeration of e-mail addresses on systems running Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 on Windows Server 2003-based computers.

Attackers who look up valid e-mail addresses in an organization can use a directory harvest attack to use those addresses to send unsolicited messages. The update allows administrators to delay SMTP address verification, making this kind of attack costly for would-be perpetrators attempting to access a global address list, according to Microsoft.

Microsoft recommends waiting for the next service pack release if this feature does not severely affect the enterprise.
