Virtual Server SP1 second beta begins

As promised, the second service pack now supports AMD's virtualization hardware as well as VSS. Similar technology from Intel was supported in the previous beta.

Added support for AMD Corp.'s virtualization hardware is one of the primary features in the second beta for Microsoft's Virtual Server 2005 R2 Service Pack 1, which became available for download this week. >p>

In addition to offering support for AMD Virtualization, called AMD-V, Virtual Server 2005 R2 SP1 beta 2 adds Volume Shadow Service, which improves support for backup machines individually. Administrators can download Virtual Server SP1 beta 2 on Microsoft's site.

The service pack, which is expected to become available in early 2007, will support Intel Corp.'s Virtualization Technology (IVT) and Active Directory integration. After initially charging for the technology, Microsoft has made its Virtual Server 2005 R2 technology available as a free download.
