Exchange Server 2007 SP3 Rollup 6 drops with 21 new fixes

If you still rely on Exchange Server 2007, you may want to carefully consider the latest rollup. It might be the last.

Microsoft has released Update Rollup 6 for Exchange Server 2007 Service Pack 3, which includes 21 new fixes since the Rollup Update 5 release in September.

Four of those 21 fixes address problems in Outlook Web Access (OWA), including an issue where the week numbers in OWA do not match the week numbers displayed in Microsoft Outlook for English and French users. Additionally, prior to rollup update 6, the OWA scroll bar would not work if an Exchange 2007 user had more than 22 all-day events in his calendar.

Another fix is important for Exchange organizations that rely on journaling features. Journal reports no longer expire or disappear when the Microsoft Exchange Transport service is restarted in Exchange Server 2007. “Any fix that prevents data loss is important,” said Rob Sanfilippo, an Exchange analyst with Directions on Microsoft, an independent analysis firm based in Kirkland, Wash. “If those [journaling] reports are lost, there could be a gap in data,” he said.

Three Microsoft Exchange Information Store fixes were also included, two of which caused the Information Store to stop working. One fix halts Information Store crashes that stem from running the Test-ExchangeSearch cmdlet. The other solves the issue of mailbox searches that resulted in Information Store shutdowns.

Yet another fix remedies an issue where Exchange 2007 client access servers would respond slowly or not at all when users attempted to synchronize their ActiveSync devices with their mailboxes.

This could also well be the last rollup update for Exchange Server 2007, Sanfilippo said. “Mainstream support ends on April 10. This is an interesting rollup in that it might be the last one. After that, it’s mostly security fixes,” he said.
