Administrators may set up mailbox storage limits on users' mailboxes to help manage storage space on the Exchange server. Obviously, too much storage allocated to each user will result in no file space on the Exchange server, while too little will result in unhappy users. So setting the limit is something of an art. In addition, users often complain about the frequency of storage warning messages. In Exchange 5.5, you can make your users' lives easier by limiting the frequency with which they are warned about nearing their storage limit.
The specified mailbox storage limit can differ with various organizations. To curb managing mailbox storage, some administrators may create personal stores (PST) on users workstations. In most instances, however, administrators prefer to have mail reside on the Exchange server and set up storage limits for mailboxes. Users should be informed that when the mailbox exceeds its specifies storage limit, the information store rejects all incoming and outgoing messages for the mailbox. People who send messages to the mailbox receive a non-delivery notification message. What users often complain about is the frequency of receiving storage limit warning messages. To limit the frequency at which these messages occur using exchange 5.5 perform the following:
- In Exchange administrator expand the name of the Exchange site.
- Then click on configuration.
- On the right pane, double-click on information store.
- Select the storage warnings tab.
Here you can set the intervals by which notification messages are sent to mailbox owners.
