The installation of an Exchange Service Pack is pretty much straightforward, and it is always advisable to have the latest service pack installed to have Exchange functioning properly.
Some network administrators take a very cautious approach when installing service packs for Exchange, because so many things can go wrong after the installation. But if you just take the necessary precautions, everything should go fine.
Service pack installation updates vital Exchange services such as the information store, so it is advisable that you do a full backup before the installation.
Restart the Exchange Server before installing a service pack. This ensures that all services are both shutting down and restarting properly.
Communicate with vendors of any third party applications installed to verify the application's compatibility with the service pack.
Getting Ready to Install The Service Pack
- Disable any anti-virus application that maybe running.
- Disable any backup application that may be running.
- Disable any other application that may be running and is not needed for the installation of the service pack.
After the completion of the service pack installation, restart the Exchange Server and enable all third-party applications. As an option, you can run the Exchange Performance Optimizer to ensure proper operation of Exchange.
